Week 1 Success!

We made it through the first week.  Thank you so much for your patience as we have been working to sort kids and get them in the right places so that we can most effectively work with them.  Our coaches have loved getting to know your swimmers.

If you still need any swim gear (goggles, suits, etc.) please see Christine.  We have a few suits we had to order.  They should be in shortly.  Christine will be at Youth Conference Thursday-Saturday, so if you need to order anything, please do so by tomorrow (or talk to Meghan).  Meghan will also be in charge of this meet, so check with her if you have any questions.  We will use part of practice Friday to review starts and turns for the meet.

I will post information for swim meets each week on this blog, so be sure to check it weekly for updates.  Our first meet is this Saturday, June 16 at Spanish Fork.  The Spanish Fork pool is located at  200 N 500 W, Spanish Fork, UT 84660.  It is basically in the parking lot of the high school (North/West side).  Warm ups are at 7 am, and the meet will start at 7:30 am.  Please check in with Coach Meghan no later than 7:10.  She will be on the south side of the pool.  Swimmers are allowed to swim up to 3 individual events and 2 relays.  Coaches will decide relays at the meet.  Swimmers need to swim at 2 meets during the summer to qualify for the county championships meets.  If you are new to swimming, I would suggest you come to the Riverside home meet on June 23 for your first meet (coaches will staff this meet and be available to answer questions and walk you through this process).

For those coming to the SF meet.  This meet will be run on a computer system.  When you check in with Meghan, she will write event numbers on your swimmer's hand.  Parents listen to bull pen announcements about event numbers and send your child to the bullpen when their event number is called.  If they don't make it to the bullpen on time, they will miss the event, so pay attention to the order of events.  We suggest you stay with the little kids until the bull pen has seated them in their heat and lane, then it's your job to cheer your swimmer on in the water.  Parents are not allowed behind the starting blocks because it interferes with timers and meet officials.  Swimmer can and may get DQ'ed (disqualified) if they are doing something illegal (i.e. pulling on the lane lines, pushing off the bottom, rolling on stomachs during backstroke, touching the wall with one hand in breaststroke or fly etc.). Coaches work on proper technique during practice, but it still happens, and our hope is that the kids learn from it, rather than get upset.  Coaches will be available to explain and remind kids about stroke rules.

When you come to a meet, it is always a good idea to bring more than 1 towel, water, a snack, and something to sit on.  Spanish Fork tends to be windy in the morning, so swimmers will probably even want a blanket.
